Royal Dutch shell operates the world’s largest gas-to-liquids (GTL) plants, which use natural gas as the raw material for liquid fuels instead of crude oil. Because of the vast natural gas supply in the US, Shell has been weighing the idea of opening a new GTL plant on the Gulf Coast.
That idea has been scrapped. In an announcement, Shell said GTL is no longer a viable option for the company in North America at this point because of its high costs and the uncertainty of gas prices.
